Fly Away Friday

Another Fly Away Friday post!
This time we are headed to Iowa to check out my blogging friend Krista.
I love checking out new cities and since I can’t travel as often as I would like, I love seeing cities and towns from your point of view!
Good day, Pink on the Cheek followers!! I am Krista and I come from the great state of Iowa. I blog over at Crescendo. I are thinking you are so excited to continue reading on about the state of Iowa. I moved to Des Moines about a year ago and have been completely surprised by the city. There is actually quite a bit to do here!

Above is the state capitol, here you can take tours and learn a little bit more about Iowa history. It rests on the East part of Des Moines and over looks the downtown area. Surrounding the capitol is an area called East Village with vintage shops, yummy local restaurants and a beautiful river walk.

The Des Moines farmer’s market is so much fun. It’s every Saturday 7AM-Noon and has lots of local farmers selling flowers, produce, honey, furniture. I’ve ventured here a few times this summer. But what’s really great is all the ‘suburbs’ also hold their own farmers markets through out the week. So there is a farmer’s market going on in the Des Moines area every single night every week! And the sweet corn is in season early (YES)!
This is the downtown area on St. Patties day. I was amazed by the crowd and parade that occurred. They even closed off a section of the downtown area in the evening for a concert!
Des Moines is a great little city. My favorite part is all the bike trails! I swear, everyone here bikes! There are trails everywhere, even a block away from where I live. It is the perfect place for an evening stroll, bike ride, or run.
I love the fact that it’s a smaller city. You still have the ‘big city’ feel, but the small town friendliness. It surprises me more and more every day with everything it holds. I still have a lot of exploring left to do. And if you really want that ‘big city’ get away, Omaha is 2 hrs, Kansas City is 2 1/2 hrs and Chicago is about 4 1/2 hrs you the perfect weekend get away with convenience.
I know we’re considered a ‘fly over’ state, but you should pass through some time and explore. The Midwest states will most likely surprise you! Thank you, Lauren for letting me take over your blog today!!!
Below is my favorite purchase so far in Des Moines..what other state can make a shirt as cool as this?
HAHAHA, I love shirts like that! Thanks for guest blogging at POTC.

Fly Away Friday

Let’s go to Texas, ya’ll! I am so excited seeing all the fun cities that my readers live in. I lived in Austin, Texas for just one year, but I still remember how good the BBQ ribs were, the sweet iced tea, and all the fun we had at Barton Springs.
So saddle up and experience Texas through the eyes of Landi!

Hello & Happy Friday to all you Pink on The Cheek readers! My name is Landi & I am the main force behind The Lifestyle Guide. I was truly flattered and so excited when Lauren emailed me about doing a Fly Away Friday post. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas but currently live in the wonderful city of Fort Worth, Texas.

one. I’ll start with the reason I came to Fort Worth in the first place – Texas Christian University.
Home of the Horned Frogs! It’s been such an incredible experience to walk the same halls that my parents, both grandmothers, step-grandmother, aunt & many other distance relatives once did. TCU has been a wonderful school & I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about coming to school here.
This is a rendering of our gorgeous new stadium… let’s hope it really does look like this because if that’s the case – it’s amazing!!
TCU Rose Bowl Practice 04
My good friend from high school, John Wooldridge (on the right) plays for TCU so it’s been a fun experience getting to see him on the field.
The zoo here is supposedly one of the greatest in the U.S. I haven’t been back since I was a little kid, but I plan to take Lola (the girl I start nannying for next week) this summer.
**Quick Fact: The lady who used to dog sit for me while I lived in Tuscaloosa, AL came to this zoo a few years ago to study/collect the semen of the elephants! Pretty interesting, right?

The name says it all, people! This is one of the best places on earth & to prove it (for all your country music fans out there) here’s a few in the lineup for the summer… all I have to say is if you come by the old Fort, you must spend one night at Billy Bob’s.
June 2nd: Travis Tritt
June 15th: Shooter Jennings
June 16th: Ronnie Milsap
June 30th: Merle Haggard
July 4th: Willie Nelson
July 7th: Summerland Tour
July 14th: Chris Cagle
July 20th: Jack Ingram
August 10th: Gary Allen
August 11th: Sara Evans
Some pretty GREAT country music stars if you ask me!! I’ll definitely be going to 2 or 3 of these babies…
From bull riding (live & mechanically!) to roping calves and seeing gun shows – the stockyards are entertainment central.
**Quick Fact: They even filmed here on the last Bachelor when Ben meets Nicki at the Stockyards for Nicki’s home town date!!
It’s not ALL cowboys & riding bulls here in Fort Worth… although I’m sure a lot of you may think that! The Amon Carter Museum is extremely famous and incredibly beautiful.
I have yet to visit this museum but my roommate has a membership here and gets free admission so I think this is somewhere else I may have to venture over to this summer!
Thank you so much, Lauren, for having me… and I hope all you lovely readers stop by The Lifestyle Guide sometime and say hello! Happy weekend! xo Landi
**I turned off the comments today, so you can head over to Landi’s blog to leave your sweet comments!**

Fly Away Friday

Fly away my little ones!
Fly Away Friday is here again, I am so happy to have Lori from
A Crazy Walk on the Safe Side.
I have Georgia on my list of places to visit so I am happy to tour through pictures from Lori,
now after reading this, I really want to visit!
Say HELLO to Lori!

hey, lovelies!
i am lori from a crazy walk on the safe side. i am so excited that lauren has asked me to tell you about where i call home {athens, georgia}, where i actually have only been a resident for about 6 months.

i am originally from metro atlanta and went to college in small town middle georgia. there i met my hubs {who i married a couple of weeks after graduating with a degree in management}… after a few years {of having zero good shopping options and being tired of eating at the same handful of restaurants}… we outgrew small town life.

since we made the move, i am constantly being asked how i like it in athens…

{the arches; famous landmark at the university of georgia}
… the answer is that i LOVE athens!! {and not only because it is the home to my beloved bulldogs.}
it is true… there is truly NOTHING like a saturday in athens. i love cheering my boys on between the hedges…

but the best way i can describe it to you is it just feels RIGHT. you see, the hubs is a small town boy. and i like to think of myself as a city girl. athens is the perfect compromise. it’s small enough that you don’t get stuck in traffic every where you go, but big enough so that there’s always something to do.

it’s a very unique town. besides the bulldogs {since we already covered that}, athens is known for good music and food. the georgia theatre is the landmark concert venue… it burned in 2009, but was rebuilt.. opening back up in 2011, better than ever.

there are a ton of delicious restaurants, most of which are locally owned… not your typical chains. there is definitely no shortage of bars {with 97 to be exact, athens actually holds the title of town with most bars per square mile}. and there’s also several cute boutiques that don’t help my ever growing shopping habit.
i like that athens is environmentally friendly. our recycling is picked up weekly, and we don’t even have to sort it! it’s also very health oriented. there are farmers markets as well as several organic stores and restaurants. and no matter the weather, you can always find people out running down milledge. {i like to say it’s my sight-seeing spot… for the shirtless men}.
it took me a few months to get adjusted… especially with not having a job {and anything to do all day}, it was tough. but i feel like i am now finding my stride… while i still hope to find a job soon, and have definitely NOT given up on the search, i am content.
athens is quickly becoming home.
we fit here.
and i am happy.

… now have i convinced you all to come visit?

lauren, thank you for having me! everyone else, please stop by my blog some time and say hello, i would love to have you!

Fly Away Friday

Hi everyone and happy Friday!
Once again, it’s Fly Away Friday and I have another special guest, Melissa.
Melissa is living in Holland, and I thought that was in like Europe.
Nope, Holland, Wisconsin!
I actually really wanted to know what was going on in Wisconsin, so Melissa was happy to share!
Take it away Melissa

Hey there!

My name is Melissa and I blog over at living holland.

I was thrilled when Lauren e-mailed me asking me to guest post over here on her sweet blog!
(A big thanks goes out to Lauren for having my shenanigans over here!)
Anyway, today I am going to share with you a little bit about where I live, Holland, Wisconsin and a little bit about the nearest city to us, Appleton, Wisconsin.
Holland is an unincorporated town located approximately 20 miles south of Green Bay, Wisconsin
(I hope you’ve heard of the Green Bay Packers!)
It is located in the general area of the little heart above.
Holland is known for its fun, awesome, exciting nightlife farming.
Yes, I’m serious, farming.
We have more cows around here than people. haha
We have one restaurant in town and one gas station. No stop lights. Simple, honest, country living.
Luckily, since I’m not always into the quiet lifestyle we are about 10 miles east of Appleton, Wisconsin. The city nearby provides me with balance.
If for some reason, you have a layover/connecting flight or business trip to Appleton, I’m going to tell you where to stop and where to stay.

The Copper Leaf Boutique Hotel, Appleton, WI. You want to stay here. By far the nicest hotel in town and it is located right downtown near food/drink/anything else you’d need during your stay in Wisconsin. It also has an awesome spa.

Katsu Ya of Japan, Appleton, WI. OK this picture is kind of crappy-looking and I hope you LOVE sushi. Katsu Ya is located right across the street from your hotel. This is the best sushi in the area.

Option 2:
Pullmans, Appleton, WI. OK so lets pretend you hate sushi. Pullmans has a huge menu and the food is delicious (I always get the salmon with dill). There is a free trolley service in downtown Appleton. Hop on the trolley at your hotel and head to Pullmans. It is right on the waterfront and is a beautiful place. I am getting married there next year! You won’t be disappointed.

In Downtown Appleton there are 2 museums, about 458634895764 bars (lets get serious, its Wisconsin) and quite a few speciality shops that sells CUTE, CUTE things that you want and need!
If you ever end up in Northeastern Wisconsin, stay in Appleton and go to the places listed. You won’t regret it, I promise! :)
Are you a small town or city person?
Are you a sushi lover or hater?

Thanks for reading about the place I call home and again, thanks to Lauren for having me!!
Feel free to click above and stop on over!
Have a great day!

Hope you guys enjoyed another city visit!
Head over to Melissa’s blog and say hello when you can, I know she will enjoy the blog love:)

  • Haddock

Had been there last year (Amsterdam)
The first time I had sushi was at Marken Island, and fell in love with it (both Sushi & Marken)
The next time when I come that side I will visit Katsu Ya.

Some people have all the luck with guest posting…. sigh :-)
(all the best …….. your wedding)
